One of the things Canada is most famous for is its trains. Canadian trains live in the imaginations of people all over the world as something they have to experience in their lifetime.

Rocky Mountaineer operates trains between Vancouver and the Canadian Rockies. For many people, the Canadian train through the Rockies most stirs their imagination.

The Rocky Mountaineer trains are seasonal. They run from the middle of April to the middle of October.

Train trips to the Canadian Rockies start from Vancouver, Banff, Jasper, Whistler or Calgary. Both one way and round trip options are available. Many people prefer to start their train trip in Vancouver and end it in Calgary. That way they can fly into Vancouver and fly out of Calgary.

The newest Canadian train route goes from Whistler, site of the 2010 Olympics, to Jasper National Park. This wonderful route begins in Whistler or Jasper and travels through the Canadian Rockies, past tiny, picturesque British Columbia villages, through ranch land, along lakes and rivers and through the pocket desert located in the British Columbia interior.

For a very short Canadian train trip, there is the Whistler Mountaineer train that travels between Vancouver and Whistler. This train is available from the last week in April until the third week in October. It does not run in the winter.

The other company operating Canadian Trains is ViaRail. For some people, it's not the Canadian Rockies that sparks the imagination but the idea of taking the train across Canada from one coast to the other.

The ViaRail Canadian train begins in Vancouver. From Vancouver it goes to Jasper, Edmonton, Toronto, Montreal, Quebec City and Halifax. The journey covers 6,300 km.

The trans Canadian train vacation from Vancouver to Halifax takes 5 days. Passengers spend three days on the train from Vancouver to Toronto. In Toronto they get off the train and spend the night in Toronto. The following morning the train departs Toronto for Montreal.

Of course, you don't have to take the train all the way across Canada. Some popular shorter routes include Vancouver to Toronto, Toronto to Montreal and Quebec City, Vancouver to Montreal including Quebec City.
