Rocky Mountaineer and Jasper National Park

A Versatile Train Trip through the Canadian Rockies

Overview

Jasper National Park

Jasper, despite its relative remoteness, is a veritable rail hub. Here are your rail options to and from Jasper.

Rocky Mountaineer offers all daylight service (you don’t sleep on the train but spend the night at a hotel instead) between Vancouver and Jasper National Park and between Whistler and Jasper National Park.

ViaRail offers overnight train service between Jasper and Vancouver and daytime train service between Jasper and Edmonton and between Jasper and Prince George.

The Prince George train (called the Skeena Train) stops for the night then continues on to Prince Rupert the following day.

Travelers, looking for a round trip train tour, can take the Rocky Mountaineer train from Vancouver to Banff National Park. From Banff, they travel by bus or rental car to Jasper along the Icefield Parkway Highway, easily one of the most spectacular drives in the world. Stops along the way include Lake Louise and the Columbia Icefield. After reaching Jasper, they take the overnight train back to Vancouver. (See our Rockies, Rails, & Glaciers package.)

Another interesting round trip beginning and ending in Vancouver,  take the train to Jasper then on to Prince Rupert and Prince George. From Prince George, catch BCFerries Northern Expedition Ferry to Port Hardy on Vancouver Island and fly directly back to Vancouver or take a bus to Victoria.

From Jasper, besides returning to Vancouver, train travelers can continue east to Edmonton, Toronto, Montreal, Quebec City and Halifax.

For your time in Jasper, don’t miss Maligne Canyon, Maligne Lake and the Jasper Tramway to the top of Whistler’s Mountain. (Not the same as Whistler Ski Resort near Vancouver.)

Jasper is 288 km (179 miles) from Banff and 416 km (259 miles) northwest of Calgary International airport.

Because train service is not available between Jasper and Banff or Calgary, you can tour by rental car or coach from Jasper to Banff or Calgary. You can also catch an airport shuttle from Jasper directly to Calgary International airport. The journey takes just under 8 hours, leaving Jasper at 1:15 PM, arriving at the Calgary airport at 9:00 PM. The reverse trip is available, leaving Calgary airport at 11:30 AM, arriving in Jasper at 6:25 PM.
